War-date letter, 2pp. 4to., concerning the murder of a Maine soldier in Boston by a certain "Aunt Ann," Calais, [Maine], May 4, 1864, reading, in part: "…I suppose you saw that an officer shooting a soldier in Boston. The soldier belonged in Calais. He and eight others were coming home on a furlough and got as far as Boston and was out having a good time…he had been drinking some. The officer had been drinking. He had no right to kill him. He did not belong to his regiment. He went along to him and took out his pistol and said do you see this. He said, 'I don't care for you or your pistol.' He had just said it when he aimed and fired. His folks are poor, but they are in great distress about it. The Methodist minister preached his funeral sermon Sunday. He said it was willful murder…Aunt Ann." Light toning, else VG.
