[American Revolution - Captain John Mercer]. Mercer served in the New Jersey Line of the Continental Army and was taken prisoner on February 1, 1777 and later exchanged on November 6, 1780. Autograph Letter Signed. 2 pages, both sides of a single sheet with a reattached cover leaf. 6 ¼" x 8". Utrecht, Holland. August 19, 1778 to Doctor Peter Middleton, New York. Mercer writes requesting that the recipient endorse sterling bills of exchange as he is "much in want of, and heartily wish I could get the money for them…" Written while a prisoner of war in Holland. Fine.
