Pay voucher, Hartford, April 17, 1783 for eleven pounds, four shillings "being the balance due Joseph Griffin on the first day of January 1781 ..." ... plus, an affidavit dated 1788 stating "This may certify that Joseph Griffin ... was in the Continental Reg. commanded by Col. John Durkee ... for three years ..." Joseph Griffin fought in the "old" Connecticut 4th Regiment under Colonel John Durkee. Griffin had worked as a proprietor in Pomfret, Connecticut earlier on in life and was well known in the community due to this position. --4th Connecticut Regiment was originally raised in April 1775 and consisted of just over 100 members. The regiment was adopted by the Continental Army in June 1775. The regiment was heavily involved in the Invasion of Canada and were involved in both Battles of Quebec. Following this devastating American loss, the regiment was temporarily disbanded. However, the regiment was reestablished in 1776. The regiment quickly became part of the Philadelphia Campaign and fought in the Battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Whitemarsh. Following the campaign, the regiment was quartered at Valley Forge over the 1777-78 winter. The regiment took part in possibly their most important battle the next September when they engaged in the Battle of Monmouth. This was the final major battle the entire regiment was involved in before the regiment was merged with the 3rd Connecticut Regiment and incorporated into the 1st Connecticut Regiment; however, a small number of men were involved in the Siege of Yorktown. This regiment operated in both the Highland Department of Connecticut and the Continental Army at various times. The company was officially disbanded at West Point, New York in 1783.
