VARICK, Richard (1753-1831) Revolutionary War officer, aide to Benedict Arnold and appointed by Washington to be Secretary for Continental Army records. Mayor of New York City. Partly-printed Document Signed, "Richd. Varick" 1p. quarto, New York City, March 7, 1795, being a tavern license for John Van Kleek who received the license "to keep an Inn or Tavern for retailing strong or spirituous Liquors in his Dwelling-House...Now, the condition of this Recognizance is such, That if the said John Van Kleek do not, during the Time that he shall keep an Inn or Tavern, keep a disorderly Inn or Tavern, or suffer or permit any Cock-fighting, Gaming, or Playing with Cards or Dice, or keep any Billiard-Table, or other Gaming-Table, or Shuffle-Board, within the Inn or Tavern..." Splits at folds have been lightly closed.
