MEREDITH, Samuel (1741-1817). Financier; First treasurer of the U. S. under the Constitution. Meredith was active in ante-Revolutionary affairs in the colonies. He distinguished himself in fighting during the Revolutionary War, and was appointed brigadier-general in the Pennsylvania militia. Resigning from the military in 1778, he became active in business and public affairs, serving several terms in the Pennsylvania Colonial Assembly and in the Congress of the Confederation 1786-1788. In 1789, his friend George Washington prevailed upon him to accept appointment as the first Treasurer of the U.S, a position in which he rendered great service to the developing nation until he retired in 1801. Letter Signed "Samuel Merideth", Treasury of the United States. Nov. 22, 1797. "By the Sloop Patience, Frederick Willis who sailed from the port yesterday you will receive six kegs agreeably to the inclosed Bill of Lading amounting to nine hundred dollars it being one hundred dollars in each keg…" Signed at the conclusion by Meredith as Treasure of the United States.
