LINCOLN, Benjamin (1733-1810) In 1777, as a major general of continental forces, he operated effectively on the flank of the British army in upstate New York, contributing to the American victory at Saratoga. He did not, however, prove a success in a senior independent command. Leading Washington's southern forces, he withdrew his army into Charleston, S.C., where, besieged, he surrendered in May 1779. Exchanged later in the year, Lincoln fought at Yorktown (1781), served a term as war secretary (1781--83), and led militia forces against Daniel Shays' rebels (1787). He stayed active in public life in various capacities, including a term as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts and many years as the Collector of the Port of Boston. In 1806, Lincoln attempted to resign as Collector but President Thomas Jefferson requested he stay until he appointed a successor. Partly-printed Document Signed, "B. Lincoln" as Collector, 11" x 8" top mounted and framed with engraving of the Revolutionary War General. The document August 6, 1801 approves the manifest of Master Josiah Lane of the Schr. Nautilus enrout to the Port of New York. VG.
