HOKE, Robert F. (1837 - 1912) Confederate major general, present at Big Bethel, where he was commended for coolness and judgment. Wounded at Chancellorsville, he recovered in time for the defense of Petersburg and Richmond. His brigade distinguished itself at Cold Harbor, acknowledged by Grant as his most costly defeat. Endorsed approval "R.F. Hoke, Maj. Gen'l." on the reverse on 30 day furlough for Sergt Stephen Horne, 42nd NC regiment to go to Mocksville, Davie County, NC, February 26, 1865 through March 27, 1865. Horne would return and was paroled out of Greensboro, May 1, 1865.
