Confederate soldier 2 page letter, written by James C. McGaughy of Richards' Company, Mississippi Light Artillery, datelined Camp on the Rapidan, November 17, 1863, to his sister. In part, "We will meet once more on this earth. If not, I hope we will meet in heaven where there will be no more parting there. Sister, I don't think this war will close for some time yet. It will go on for two or three years yet. ... We were in the Bristoe fight. It was a small fight. It appeared like it was not so small. WE WAS IN THE HEAT OF THE FIGHT. I HAD A HORSE KILLED IN THE FIGHT. IT WAS MY OFF HORSE. I WAS ON MY SADDLE HORSE AT THE TIME. ... IT WAS A SHELL BALL. IT WENT THROUGH MY BLANKETS. IT DID NOT MISS ME VERY FAR. IT BLOWED THE BLOOD ALL OVER MY LEG THAT WAS UP TO THE HORSE. ... "
