A Union soldier's 4pp. letter, written and signed by D. Fisher, to his sister, LaGrange Tenn, Dec. 28th, 1863. In part, " .. I stated that the Regt. had gone scout after Gen. Forrest ... Our cavalry had a fight with them about 15 miles from here - and were scattered like sheep. They came in by two's and three's, some without hats, some without horses. They reported that they were surrounded by 4,000 or 5,000 rebs that their col was all shot to pieces and that their Lt. Col. and about half the regt was either captured or taken prisoners. They were terribly frightened. It finally turned out about 30 or 40 were taken prisoners, probably a few killed. Their Col. and Lt. Col. came in about dusk. ... The object of the scout was to catch Gen. Forrest. I think he has out maneuvered our Genls and got South of us. ... I see by the papers that a great many troops are reenlisting for the war. I don't think they'll get many of our regt. ... There are a few of our regt going to the negro regts as officers. I don't think I would like to go into a negro regt. ...
