BEAUREGARD, Pierre Gustave Toutant (1818 - 1893) Confederate major general who initiated the attack on Fort Sumter, which started the Civil War. Beauregard also led with great distinction at First Bull Run, Shiloh, and in the defense of Richmond. Southern Telegraph Companies telegram, 8" x 4", from General Bragg to Gen. Beauregard, from Richmond, May 5th 1864. Bragg advises "To save time have ordered Pickett direct to recall Clingman's Brigade so as to keep it between him and the enemy." Beauregard's Autograph Note Signed in pencil is on the reverse, "May 5, 1864, 4hr PM, Have already ordered Pickett to concentrate the troops of his command. Had no troops at Plymouth and Washington be recalled. 1/2 Regt. attached. GTB." VG.
