A Union Naval sailor's letter, written and signed by F. E. Smith, datelined U.S.S. Peosta, Off Paducah, March 31/64, 3pp., to his wife Sarah E. Smith, Northport L. Island, New York. In part, " I suppose that you have heard of our skirmish through the papers ... It was a gallant fight ... We learn that the loss and wounded is nearly one thousand. General Forrest is reported to be about 28 miles from this place and suppose he will make another attack. If he does, he will fare worse than he did last Friday. There was a good many of their dead in the buildings that were burnt by the shells from my vessel and those buildings are still burning and the smell is dreadful. Forrest gives in that he was whipped and by the negroes. The fort is garrisoned by negroes. They had their dress parade through the city today and it caused the southern sympathizers to look down. I have more faith in the blacks since I have seen them fight. I am still second officer present and do not have much time to spare. I want the enemy to come and give us another fight or else clear out. This keeping lookout all the time is tedious . ..."
