HAMPTON, Wade (1819 - 1902) Confederate lieutenant general of cavalry whose daring exploits at Antietam, Gettysburg, and Petersburg won him fame in both North and South. He was elected Governor, serving 1876 to 1879. After that, he served two terms as U.S. Senator, from 1879 to 1891. Autograph Note Signed "Wade Hampton, Maj. Gen'l", to Tel Opr Petersburg, in full "I write Tel op. Kept-up regularly with my office here." ... plus, Signed sheet, "Wade Hampton, Governor, So. Car."
