JOHNSON, Bushrod Rust (1817-1880) was a Confederate general in the American Civil War and an officer in the United States Army. He served under Robert E. Lee throughout the 10-month Siege of Petersburg, and surrendered with him at Appomattox. Autograph Letter Signed "B.R. Johnson", datelined Petersburg Virginia, May 10, 1865 to General Kelton, 2pp. In part, "Having taken the oath of allegiance I desire to secure as soon as possible a passport from the Major General Commanding this Military Division, the Lieutenant General Commanding the US Army or the Secretary of War ... to enable me to proceed ... securely to the vicinity of Brighton Illinois. ... I wear citizens clothes and have no inclination to attract attention of any kind ... I hope to abide in retirement in peace ...."Johnson returned to teaching to become a professor and co-chancellor of the University of Nashville with former Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith.
