DIX, John Adams (1798--1879) was a U.S. senator and Union general in the American Civil War. Born in Boscawen, New Hampshire, he joined the army at the age of 15 to take part in the War of 1812. He was notable for arresting the pro-Southern Maryland General Assembly, preventing that divided border state from seceding. Autograph Letter Signed, "John A. Dix" 2pp., to Judge Hon. J.S. Black. Dix advises "I did not intend that our recent association should terminate without taking leave of you ... I shall look back to one gratifying connection with the late administration ... but think things might have been left on better footing if the cabinet ... could have had six months instead of six weeks to shape its policy ..."
