GRANGER, Robert Seaman (1816-1894) was a career officer in the United States Army, reaching the brevet rank of major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He graduated from West Point in 1845 and served in the Mexican War. He is best remembered for his gallantry during the Battle of Chickamauga. On the second day of the battle, September 20, 1863, he reinforced, without orders, Major General Thomas's Corps on Snodgrass Hill, staving off Confederate forces until dark, and making possible the safe retreat of Federal forces. Document Signed "R.S. Granger" on 1 page document datelined Louisville, August 27, 1862, Certifying that William Brown did serve in the Indiana Foot volunteers and is entitled to pay.
