War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on embossed American flag patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., [n. p., but Covington, Kentucky], Sept. 4, [1862], reading, in part: " - we are hear at Covington, Kentucky just across the river. The people are drafting hear and it makes a dratful time. They are bringing in every man in today to dig entrenchments. We have artillery and cannon planted all around here. The place being very large and alive with soldiers - yesterday there was a niger company came here to entrench. They came here from Ohio. They was black enough I tell you. We look for an attack all the time - if they interfere while we are hear wont we give them a warmer. We hold ourselves in readiness all the time. We are bond to fit for the red, white and blues long as we are wanted. We are said to be the best company hear - it would do you good to see the boats. They are going across the river all the time. They are shipping horses and mules into Ohio very fast now to keep them from the rebels. Yesterday they shipped about six or ten hundred. The stores and all kinds of business is stopped except government business - that glass that you gave me is all broke to pieces. I tell you I felt bad about it, but never cry for spill milk. Some of the boys is sick, but not bad. They have good care takeoff them, but one of our company had the [?] and was out on the street - a clever fellow gave him some molasses and it was poison but we gut the doctor and gave him some milk and he gut better. There is plenty of them here - Jacks tells me to tell you that he done his duty last nite. We sleep in the hall on our arms, sleep like pigs in the clover. Direct to Covington, Cumtucky, 96 Regiment, Company B in care of Captain Lenard O. V. I. - A. A. Thayer." The original stamped transmittal cover is included.
