War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., [n. p., but Covington, Kentucky], Sept. 11, [1862], reading, in part: "-Jack and Dan Kefer is not well. They have the Dyarrell. They haven't dun no duty for two days. They have got quarters at our sick house. The rebels left. They come down to camp this morning. We are camped about fore miles south of Covington. Our company went out on picket about fore miles from camp last night to gard bridges. We graded for but seen nothing. The rest of the regiment laid in the entrenchments ready for a fite. We are called in line of battle every day. The rebels is said to be in sight of our pickets but I do not see them this morning. This morning when we ware coming to camp the boys wanted to rest - the captain was in a hurry and marched on - the boys sat down - he stopped a few minutes. Our shirts was wet so that we could ring the water out of them but I stood it well as the rest. This is a very ruff camp - I would not live here for the half of the place-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Minor tomes, else VG.
