War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on a rare battle of New Orleans engraved stationery, by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., [n. p., but Newport, Kentucky, Sept.], Monday the 22, 1862, to his wife, Annie reading, in part: "-we have a preacher in our company by the name of rite. He preach to us last nite. We are going to have more religious worship than we have done. His talks was in the second book of Peter-he is a very fine man-Annie, I don't think that it would do for you to come to camp anymore or I would loose you. There is a very nice young man says that you was the nicest woman that he has seen since he left home. He was a clerk in [Mt.] Vernon-there is a man in [Captain William] Mitchell's company that went to sleep and will have his trial today-it is going very hard with him if not shot. I must close to drill-I am coming home as soon as I can-A. A. Thayer. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light soiling, else VG.
