War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on "Great Naval Engagement off Fort Wright" patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., Camp Bates, [Newport, Kentucky], Oct. 4, 1862, reading, in part: "-excuse me for not rioting. The boys out on picket last nitee and there was a few rebels seen and one of our boys shot at him 3 times but missed him. We are expecting a fit pretty soon. We have marching orders but don't now ho soon we will leave. I hope soon. Annie, I thought I would [make] you a ring to look at. I commenced to make it and Corpil Black finished it for me. He is a particular friend of mine-the rebels say that they are going to hoist a black flag and never give any quarters as long as there is a man left if so they soon be threw. Give my love to all-direct to Newport, Kentucky, 96th Regiment, Company B-A. A. Thayer." Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light soiling, else VG.
