War-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., "Camp Mary," [Cynthiana, Kentucky], Oct. 27, 1862, reading, in part: "-we have a little winter hear now-the snow fell 6 or 8 inches & blew very hard. All the rest of the regiments took in the guards but ours. They had to stand there. [There] is much fuss that I don't think that this regiment will ever do much good. There was three captains [that] had their swords taken away-yesterday for disobedience the colonel. I expect big fuss. Today they have there trial. All they use of for is to guard rebel property and that wont do for us. We are [in] the snow & haven't any gloves nor boots not money to get them. It makes the boys hump pretty bad, some near bare foot but my shoes is good yet. We have four in ours bunks now-sleep very comfortable-there was one of them took fire last nite and made the boys get out in a hurry. It burnt one side-direct to Cantucky, 96 Regiment, Company B in care of Captain Leonard OVI-A. A. Thayer-on our last march some of the boys had very soar feet. Some bled & some was badly blistered-the boys talk of getting hard up about women, but as for me I think I can wait a little longer." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light soiling, else VG
