War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on "View of the Capitol at Washington" patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., "Camp Nicholasville, Nov. 2 1862," reading, in part: "-I feel to thank the lord for his kindness towards me. We had preaching this fore noon by our chaplain. His name is Ketchum. He is a very nice man-there was a man killed in the 108th Illinois. [most likely, 1st Sgt. John S. Slater] He was laying in his bunk. He was a orderly sergeant & this man had a grudge against him & was drunk-he got a hatchet, went in & struck him in the head killing him almost instantly so he will get shot it pay[s] the bill-we seen old henry Clay's monument. It is a nice one. It is one hundred feet high. It is worth looking at-we are ordered to cut sod and build a wall around our tents to raise them up about two feet to give them more room & keep them warm-direct to Nicholasville, Cantucky, 96 Regiment, Co. B OVI in care of Captain Leonard-Alfred A. Thayer." An original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light soiling, else VG
