Union soldier letter written by W(illiam) H. VanIderstine who, on 8/25/1862 was mustered into "D" Co. NJ 13th Infantry. Wounded 7/30/1864 Atlanta, GA (Severe wound in left forearm, amputated), and was discharged for wounds on 1/30/1865 at Newark, NJ. 3pp., to his aunt, datelined Camp 13th, NJ Vols., Duck River Bridge, December 4, 1863. In part, "... our forces have been crowned with success Easy, West, and South. And for the last two days prisoners have been going over this railroad by the thousands. There has been a big battle down front this last week and it is reported that Bragg is in full retreat toward Atlanta Ga. .. We expect a dash from the General Wheeler every night and are fortifying our position ... If he does come, he will get a warm reception. ..."
