War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., n. p., but Vicksburg, Miss., January 12, 1863, reading, in part: "-we are still laying here in the muddle in plain site of Vicksburg & doing nothing only making mud bridges & the negro working on the canal. We have our quarters ditch so the water runs off. Our regiment has to go on picket tomorrow-we got no mail but there is one for us-the mail to go to General Smith's headquarters & then to General Burbridge's headquarters before it comes to the regiment \-there is a great many sick hear & dying every day & nite. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light toning, else VG.
