War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., n. p., but Vicksburg, Miss., February 1, 1863, reading, in part: "-we are still encamped here in site of Vicksburg digging a canal to turn the river so we can have the river and let them hold the Burg. There was a captain & several privates came over & give themselves up & say that they think we will get the place-they don't care for they want the thing over. You wouldn't believe how much dissatisfaction there is in the army now. The boys say that they will not stay any longer than spring-they say that after this fit is over we are going back to Cantucky-we only had to work on the levee one day-from A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light toning, else VG.
