War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., "Encamped on the battlefield near Vicksburg, Mississippi, June 7, 1863," reading, in part: "-the fit here seems to get along very slow still. Picket fighting all the time nite & day. Our cannon & gun boats & mortar boats fired every nite that they will try to break out but we are ready for them anytime. We shout about in there works. The other day they sent a squad of men to carry it & then they had to send out another squad to carry them-Alfred A. Thayer." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light toning, else VG.
