War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., "Encamped in the rear of Vicksburg, Mississippi, June 27, 1863," reading, in part: "-[on June 25th, General John A.] Logan had his arrangement made to charge on one of their large forts [on the Jackson Road]. He had it under mined & powder put under to blow it up but it didn't do as well as he expected, but he made the charge [anyway] & the rebs had the other. He held it till he got one gun planted in it & held it about 24 hours then had to leave. The rebs threw there hand shells [hand grenades] & made it too hot for them. They are digging under it again for another blast. Before they made the charge we commenced on the left to draw their attention-it was pretty hot for they fired on us a cross fire. We laid at the foot of a hill. I tell you we laid pretty close. There were several pieces of shell fell around us but none hurt-in the next letter I send to you I will send-I will send you a cap like they us on the cannon. You must be careful & not pull that little wire or you will get hurt-A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light toning, else VG.
