War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., "Encamped still in the rear of Vicksburg, Mississippi, July 1, 1863," reading, in part: "-I don't expect that you get my letters-because if the letters all went threw people would get to much news. The talk is now that no soldier letters will go now-[I] sleep standing on my post sometimes [it is] so dark that I cant see to inches before me & sometimes raining as hard as it can but I feel very thankful to god for giving me health so I can do my duty-I was out on picket & bought 8 quarts [apples] at ten cts a quarter. The captain help me carry them in. I made them in pies & sold them at 25 cts a piece. [That] more than doubled my money-politics begin to get up & men begin to get discouraged. It is nearly enough to discourage any body laying here in the ravines & if we stick our heads up above the bank we get them shot at. If they want soldiers to fight much longer they must begin doing something-as long as I live, A. A. Thayer-". An original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light toning, else VG
