War-date Union soldier's letter, 1p. oblong 4to., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., [n. p., but Jackson, Mississippi], July 17, [1863]," reading, in part: "-my health hant been as good for a few days as usual but not sick-the rebs evacuated Jackson & skedaddled-we got several hundred prisoners. We left there yesterday & are staying about 3 miles waiting for tools- to repair a railroad 8 or 10 miles from here then we are going to Vicksburg-our regiment only [lost] one man killed [18 year-old, Private Asbury Turner KIA July 10th, Buried Vicksburg National Cemetery, Grave 0-635] & 5 wounded-". Unsigned, but an original stamped transmittal cover addressed, "Mr. Alfred A. Thayer, Co., C, 96th Battalion, O. V. I., 13th Corps." is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. VG.
