War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., "Camp in Vicksburg, Mississippi, July 27, 1863," reading, in part: "-I will have to tell you these news of John Tarr's death. He went to Jackson with us & wasn't very well so they put him to cook. He was cooking [at Jackson, Miss., on July 11th] & fell dead. They say he was sun struck-it is pretty good times now. If it only stays so a little while I think the war will be played out-there is a great many troops camp here but I cant tell how many & there is a great many colored people here. They are a dying off very fast. They say the reason is that they never are used to using river water, always used sister water. We drew new clothing today-A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light toning, else VG.
