War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., "Camp in Vicksburg, Mississippi, August 4, 1863," reading, in part: "-we have orders to leave here today -for Natcheese [Natchez] but I don't know whether we will get off or not. Those that have been down there say it is a very pretty place & good water. If so I want to get there for in drinking river water-[is] enough to kill them. Our regiment is getting pretty small. Our company left Clarence with one hundred ^ one privates & now we have from 10 to 15 for duty so you see there is quite a difference-we are going to have our regiment filled up with drafted men. Then will see easier times-I think the war will be over before long for the rebs is getting badly discouraged now. There is some few of them that will fight [to] the last. There was some that was paroled at Vicksburg that went right straight for Jackson & went to bushwhacking. Our men shot them & found their parole in there pockets & some got taken prisoner. Tell Emily that my bedfellow is all rite & I think if she was to sleep with him she would [say] so & to carve the chickens-A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light toning, else VG.
