War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., Vicksburg, [Nov.] 25, 1863, reading, in part: "-when I was in Memphis I traded my coat for a blouse & got a dollar to boot-we have the best soldier's home here-when I got up this morning I caught a gray back [lice]-when Silas Ashton left the regiment he left a letter under his knapsack. [It] said he was sick of the service & was a going to drown himself in the river. I guess he didn't do that, but don't tell Ashton's folks-I wish you could see Vicksburg. I have seen more of it now than I ever did before. It is the worst looking place I ever seen. It is hills & hollars & mud holes-there has been some boats fired on by the guerrillas between here & New Orleans but not much damaged-A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light toning, else VG.
