War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp 4to., letter written by Corp. Gilbert J. Stark, Co. B, 32nd Ohio, "Camp in City of Vicksburg, July 27, 1863," to his sister, reading, in part: "-George Peters is sick, Robert Reed [lists three more names] are all that is not fit for duty now. Captain Meadum of Lewisburg arrived here this morning. He came to take Luke Burnham home. [Pvt. Lucas Burnham, Co. G, 95th Ohio. DOD 7/22/63 15th Corps army hospital, Walnut Hills, Miss.] Luke was out about 3 miles from here to a convalescent camp-he just returned with the sad news of Luke's death-Luke died about 3 days ago. He has not been well for a long time. He says that he will take Luke's body home if he can but I think it will be impossible, the weather is so warm. [Stark was correct. Burnham body now lies in Vicksburg's National Cemetery.] We are trying to fix it so as to have Bob Reed go home with him. One does not look at the past & think of all the young men that has died & has been killed from about Milford- a paper of the 22nd states that [Confederate cavalry raider General John Hunt] Morgan has been captured with his entire command, this I hope will prove true-the captain also brings the news of Ann Watson's death-he was at the funeral; people said at home as well as in the army: she was a very strange person, her faults must be buried with her. I pity Watson. He will be a poor hand to take care of, a family of little children that has no mother. Our army has mostly come in from Jackson & they are embarking some are gone up the river & some down it-part of the command will go to Mobile. A sufficient force will be left here to hold this place-the Southern Confederacy is about played out-how do you get along. The boys have all gone to war. You, of corse, miss them very much-the hospital boats have nearly all gone to Memphis-our boats lay at the landing-about a dozen. We have been having a very hard rain here-it will be very beneficial to the army. It has been very dry here-Gill J. Stark. Minor spotting, else VG.
