RAWLINS, John A. (1831-1869) was a close friend and confidant of Ulysses S. Grant, serving on Grant's staff throughout the Civil War. Rawlins was Grant's chief defender against allegations of insobriety, and was appointed Secretary of War when Grant was elected President of the United States.
