Civilian Letter written to Lieut. James Hannegan, 5th Regt. O.V. Cav., Huntsville Alabama, datelined Home Feb. 22, 1864, 6pp., with original cover. In small part, "I went to the city last week to hear Miss Dickinson speak. She is a new oratress, her subject was 'Words for the Hour' ... she is an abolitionist. You may know that when I tell you she gives all she makes by these lectures to the 'Freedmens Aid Society'. I could not endorse everything she said, for I am not so adamant an abolitionist as some. But I admire her earnestness and her independence with which she expressed her views. And all the while did not overstep the bounds of maidenly modesty she reproved the Cincinnatians as few men would dare for their treatment of Wendell Phillips when he spoke there" ... The writer continues with several book reports of those which he has recently read.
