War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., Marion Hospital, New Orleans, La., March 19, 1864," reading, in part: "-I went with the boys 4 miles beyond Franklin-staid there 7 days then [we were] ordered to march. The general sent orders to the doctor not to take a man, only those hay could march-they sent me back to Franklin. The hospital was broken up there so they sent me to Brashear City-a very nice place. It is on the outside of the city, kind of a country place. That suit me much better than in the city-it is a very nice place. A very large house & splendid furnish. In the room I am in is 100 men. The most are able to go all over as far as I am concerned . I have done duty in the company when I was no better than I am now but since I got back I have had a great many fevers that I didn't suit to get-I have-a good appetite-the doctor said it was my left lung. The same one that was diseased before-& I have a very sore mouth-A. A. Thayer. Direct to Marion Hospital-Ward S, bed 57." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Some toning, else VG. $200-$300
