War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., Marion Hospital, New Orleans, La., April 20, 1864, reading, in part: "-it is reported the rebs has got in behind them [Banks' army]. I am afraid will see pretty hard times-the rebs has got in possession of Fort Jackson & are threatening Memphis. There is going to be very hard fighting this spring. There has been several had there [already.] There army [has] taken off since the fight . One poor fellow in our ward had his [arm] taken off today. The Drs. ask him about it & he told them if they thought it [best] he was rite so they put him under the influence of chloroform & examined it. The limb was all splintered from his elbow close to the shoulder & a piece of the ball in so they took it off-he didn't never jerk a muscle. It was his right arm. They took it off close to the shoulder. Poor boy, he was a New York boy& a new recruit-if you can get any news from the army rite it for we cant get any. The boys is getting well fast. We have 16 vacant beds now-A. A. Thayer-" The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Minor spotting, else VG.
