A nice pair of war-date Union soldier's letters, totaling 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., Marion Hospital, New Orleans, La., April 26 & May 1, 1864, concerning the Union disaster at the battle of Sabine Cross Roads, La., April 8, 1864, reading, in part: "-[April 26th]-I received a letter from Wm. B. & Dan April 17th-both well & harty. Our regiment loss in the fight 8 killed, missing 42 & the Colonel [Joseph W. Vance, killed]-[May 1st]-Annie, our troops had to fall back [after the battle of Sabine Cross Roads.] The rebs follow them. O, what a lot of good men we have lost out there. All done no good. It all was because [General] Banks don't know how to handle men. A. J. Smith told him right to his face that he could pick out a corporal that could handle men better than he [Banks] could-A. A. Thayer-". One original stamped transmittal cover is included with the pair. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Minor toning, else VG. (2 letters, one cover)
