War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., "Camp of 96th O. V. I., Morganza Bend, La., Sept. 8, 1864," reading, in part: "-I had to quit to get a gun& clean it up-it had been a job for it had been in the salt water& it was awful-the regt most all have the scurvy. The talk is that the regt is going to be reported unfit for duty & if not we will go to reinforce Steele up White River in a day or two. The regt was dirty, raged. If I ever was sick of sogeren it was when I came to the regt at New Orleans. Our regt & the 23 Wisconsin in an old transport three times thick as they could stand& the boat was dirty as a hog pen-I slept with Billy on his mess chests so I got along very well-we have a very good camp, clean & nice, close to the river & very nice springs but it aint ice water at the old mansion-A. A. Thayer." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light spots, else VG.
