War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., "Camp Morganza Bend, La., Sept. 25, 1864," reading, in part: "-it will be a little while till our time will be out, not quite 11 months. I wish it was only 11 days not because I am so sick of sogern for I think we are a fighting for the glorious Union in the world. If I was a single man I would fight till it was over if the good lord would give me health-I had but one letter since I left the hospital-when I left James Sherer was acting head nurse. He told me he would send my letters as fast as they come. There was a lot kept on furlough & he with the rest. They landed about a mile & a half above us. I got to find it out. I went up to see the boys & ask him where my letters was & he said he had sent them all to the regt- [but] he believe he had one in his valise-he went to his valise & he had one of my letters [?] home but not opened so it is hard to tell where the others is. He had one of the old head nurse letters careen home for he was home on furlough-just to think he was a fine man but I never can think so again. He bored money of one of the nurses & gave his note for 11 dollars. The nurse was sent to his regt. so he put it in my hands to collect & sent it to his wife. When I left I put the note in another man's hand& he got payed off & refused to pay the note so the fellow gave me back the note & I don't know what do to for he is out to have his pay-he belongs to the 47 Pennsylvania. I would give a dollar out of my pocket to get it paid for he was a particular friend of mine-A. A. Thayer." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light spots, else VG.
