War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., Morganza Bend, La., Oct. 31, 1864, reading, in part: "-we went on a scout of 11 days-had nothing to do only picket & forage-there was a party of sharpshooters. We only got 3 men wounded in our brigade, none in our regt.-we was relieved the 10th day. Came back on the 11-leave here tomorrow-for the White river-we will see cold weather & hard times but [will be] about 4 hundred miles near home-we will be in the state of Arkansas, the state we had our first fit in-A. Thayer-". An original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light spots, else VG.
