War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., "96th O. V. I., Camp at White River Landing, Arkansas, Nov. 21, 1864," reading, in part: "-the river has risen gradual since we got here-if it rises 10 or 15 feet more we will have to get out of here-I have the old colonel's photograph & Heckley. I will send it home-our brigade is tore up-one regt. sent back to New Orleans & one back to Morganza-to be consolidated with other regts of their own state-it leaves us here with 3 regts-you spoke about me sending you a revolver when the women has to go to fight. I will quit-the Union better [than] be quiet-my bunk mate is an older world man than I am & has given up ever belong call dead but I has it. His name is Dan Henry-there was a man in my tent the other day & [we] got taking about his wife. He said if his time was [over] he never would go home & I don't blame him for his wife has turned out purfect for he seen her once in Saint Louis & once down close to New Orleans. He spoke to her & she said she could have written him & she will for hen is true grit-A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light soiling, else VG.
