War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., "Camp of the 96th O. V. I. at White River Landing, Arkansas, Nov. 25, 1864," reading, in part: "-there is 4 Ohio regiments here now, ours & the 83, 120, 114-the major [Joseph Leonard] has gone home-& also our orderly & several more of the non commish-when we got consolidated we had an over plush of non commish so they reduced some & mustered out some. The old major had rather stayed. He done things that no other officer done in this regt. He treated Co. B [finely] when he was promoted & before he went home I got treated twice. I was over to Billy's one night & he treated all the officers in the regt to wine & cake. It was very nice. After they got threw he call Billy & me in and introduced me to his wife. [We] eat cake-drank wine & smoked 15ct cigars so I went over again with the rest got treated again-Mrs. Leonard is a very fine woman, very talkative-A. A. Thayer-". An original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light soiling, else VG.
