War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. C, "96 Battalion, Co. C, Ohio Encamp at White River Landing, Arkansas, Dec. 17, 1864," reading, in part: "-there was a detail made to guard a boat to New Orleans- & I was one of them. We landed at New Orleans the 2 of this month-started back the 13th-I did not get to go the hospital-I saw the old mail carrier-he went back to the hospital [and] told the boys I was there. They came & seen me-while we were on the boat we had-cabin passengers [and not captured cotton] but instead of the government getting the cotton. They held it & after we went on the boat she got damaged by [an]other boat [that] landed against her & it cost the government five hundred dollars to repair her-it turned out rather bad for the government. The name of the boat was Virginia-maybe you will see an account of it-A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light toning, else VG.
