War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. C, "96 Battalion, O. V. I., north of White River Landing, Ark., Dec. 28, 1864," reading, in part: "-we have pretty good times now. The 161st New York is here attached to our brigade-we have some cases of the smallpox but mostly all negroes, two of 3 cases in the battalion & they to a place by themselves quite a piece from the battalion, but it is too late in the season to be bad-A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light toning, else VG.
