War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., "Camp of 96th O. V. I., Louisiana, March 9, 1864," reading, in part: "-we have been on the march 2 days-we marched 30 miles, 4 miles beyond Franklin-it is said there is rebels at Newberry, but only a few-if they find we are a coming they will leaven double quick-in a few days we will have a large army moving along-the first brigade is in front, as usual but it is said that we [after] we get started we will be in the rear. We have got into enemy's country again. It commenced raining last night-we have nothing but our little shelter tents but they keep the rain off pretty well-I am rioting in a large sugar house-the sugar is played out. The order is that no property shall be disturbed in Louisiana. As soon as we stop there is a guard detailed to guard all property. I don't know but that rite for there is a good many Union folks in this state. If they are Union folks they ought to be protected as this is as pretty country as ever laid out doors. everything is in bloom. Gardens is very nice-Annie, there is nicer country houses than you ever seen in Ohio-there is some very nice looking women & that you know is what always took my eye but I have never spoken to any of them yet [although] some of the boys have & since got married. I guess I shan't marry them. The hosfers go for them, but the officers day will be over sometime [then] the poor private will be equal with them-the privates do all the work & the ofsers get the praise. I was tickled yesterday. The old Cap rode along & said to one our boys that has been nurse in the hospital-'how do you like the war.' He said 'I like the war better than some that is in it'. The old Cap rode on-Wm. is well & harry & still cooks for the cornel-on the march he has nothing to carry & can ride on the wagon if he wants to. He joins with me in love to all-A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Some toning, else VG
