War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. B, 96th Ohio Vols., "Camp of 96th O. V. I., Louisiana, 1,10 miles North west from New Orleans by Crow tick, March 14, 1864," reading, in part: "-all the recruiting officers but Dan is back. Colonel Brown is back but not many recruits. I guess Dan got more than all the rest-it is expected we will have very hard marching to do-we have just come here to get fitted out for the expedition. We have got our clothing this morning-our transportation is cut down worse than ever. Captains & lieutenants that use to have 10 tents now have 5. The colonel & lieutenant colonel only have 1 in place of 2. The privates have only shelter made out of light muslim & have to carry them. Cooking utensils is cut down just as low as they can-tell me whether the draft has gone off & who was drafted if there was any one that I new. I hope there wont be needed for another draft in Ohio. I think there is enough in the field to do what there is to do-when we march through Louisiana we wont find many rebels-43 boys is gone back-for 3 years longer. Poor fellows. I hope that they wont have much more fighting to do-I will wait till my 3 years is out-A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Some toning, else VG.
