Union Soldier's letter, written and signed by "Jno A. Green", 1pp., datelined Hospt 2nd USHvy Art, Ft. Pickering, April 7, 1864. Phonetic spelling, in part, "Ever thing is in excitement her sins Genl Chalmer drove our picket in this morning it is rumored her that he has twenty thousan men, and thirty pieces of artillery with him. if he has that many men he will capture memphis with all ease and give us all we can due to hold the fort. if all the troops in the fort was white men thar wod be now daut in my mind but we cod hold the fort again five time the number but thar are some three thousan negro in her and only about one thousan white men .... i wod like to be in one more battle to make the even number ..." Organized from 1st Tennessee Heavy Artillery (African Descent). Designated 2nd United States Colored Heavy Artillery March 11, 1864, and 3rd Heavy Artillery April 26, 1864. Attached to District of Memphis, Tenn., Dept. of Tennessee, to June, 1864. Memphis, Tenn., District of West Tennessee, to July, 1865. 2nd Infantry Brigade, District of West Tennessee, to September, 1865. District of West Tennessee to April, 1866. Served as garrison at Fort Pickering, and in Defences of Memphis, Tenn., and in District of West Tennessee till April, 1866. Mustered out April 30, 1866.
