Each of the TWENTY-FIVE letters are written by Gertrude Biddle, to her husband James, July 14, 1862 through August 31, 1864. Nearly each letter has its original cover. This grouping does not have transcriptions. Although Gertrude does update her husband on personal matters, there is a surprising amount of War information that she gleans from the newspapers. Here are few; (6/18/62) "McClellan has been strongly reinforced with 25,000 to 50,000 men and I hope will use these fresh troops before they are redirected to Richmond ... Many of McDowell's troops have gone down. ... Gen. Ricketts when last heard from, was still at Front Royal in the upper part of Virginia ..."; (7/1/62) "I see in a dispatch from Memphis that Farragut and Davis have joined this fleet at Vicksburg which makes the capture of that place very sure.".; (7/23/62) " ... Asst Secretary of Int ... that several of the first Generals in the Army of the Potomac had testified to the President, that if McClellan had ordered an advance instead of a retreat, we should have benn in Richmond before this."; (8/1/62) " I send you the orders issued today by the Secretary of War and you will see that the rules about leaves of absence are very stringent. (attached is the clipping). Including in this grouping are TWO letters written by Gertrude's sister.
