War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. C, "96 Battalion, O. V. I., Battalion, [White River Landing, Ark.], Jan. 26, 1865," reading, in part: "-we don't need a Dr. very much for there is no sickness worth speaking-only a few sore eyes & a few cases of the small pox. [We] only lost one case. It aint a dangerous diseases. If a person is all rite when he takes it aint much worse than the measles. Some of the boys has got well & hardly a mark left other than that [he] has been vaccinated-we have got a house built at each picket post with fire places in so it is very nice picketing-only don't get as much sleep-A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light toning, else VG.
