War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. C, 96th Ohio Vols., "96 Bet. [Battalion], O. V. I., New Orleans, La., Feb. 16, 1865," reading, in part: "-I left the Bet. [battalion] yesterday on a detail in the ambulance Core. There is 25 from our Bet. so we are in New Orleans to draw mules-as soon as we can get transportation we will leave for Mobile-I would like to drive until my time is out. If it happen[s] to be ruff going-the poor mules wont get much care-we will have pretty hard times to get loaded. It may be we will get off in a few day or to-we will have over a hundred mules toy take. I left the boys all rite-A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light soling, else VG.
